Eric Cantor – GOP Will Repeal ObamaCare

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) promises that a GOP Congress will repeal ObamaCare:

"we will do everything we can" to delay, defund and repeal Obamacare.

Let’s hold Eric to his promise.  Elect a GOP House and Senate – then put their feet to the fire!

Bob Goodlatte on the Upcoming Tax Increase

MASSIVE TAX INCREASE WILL HIT ALL AMERICANS

More than 7 million jobs have been lost in the last three years and over 3 million of those jobs have been lost since the President signed the so-called stimulus bill into law last year.

Unfortunately, these are numbers that the American people are all too familiar with and yet the Congress continues to pursue an agenda that will further threaten American job creators. While Americans are asking “Where are the jobs?”, the Majority in Congress continues to demonstrate that they do not understand the priorities of our constituents or appreciate how private sector jobs are created.

It is clear: the policies of higher taxes, runaway spending, government takeovers and record debt which have become commonplace in Washington these days are having a chilling effect on the nation’s small businesses, the economic engine of our economy. From the so-called stimulus bill to the government takeover of our health care system and the threat of higher taxes and massive deficit spending, these policies have further hindered the creation of private sector jobs.

Hurt and Griffith Begin Ads

Virginia Senator Robert Hurt and House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith have begun airing ads in their quests to out freshman lefty Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) and Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA), respectively.  They are basically just name ID pieces, but well done.

National Cost of Government Day

Yesterday was National Cost of Government Day.  What does that mean?  It means that, on average, you have finished paying the cost of government for this year:

Today is the first day you stopped working for Uncle Sam and began working for yourself. Americans must labor 231 days out of the year just to meet all costs imposed by government – 8 days later than last year and a full 34 days longer than 2008.

Sadly, if you live in Maryland (as I do) you will continue paying for the cost of government through September 4th (4th worse in the nation).  Delawareans will have met their obligations tomorrow.  Virginians on August 25th.

McDonnell Petitions Feds for Immigration Enforcement Deal

August 4, 2010 by Cato
Filed under Immigration, Virginia, Virginia Politics

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) has petitioned the federal government to allow some Virginia State Police officers to perform some immigration enforcement duties.  This would fall under the “287g” program.

Currently, state police policy gives troopers the option of asking about immigration status when it is relevant to a criminal investigation.

"Our policy does not mandate that it be asked," state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. "If it’s relevant to bringing an investigation to a conclusion, then the question will be asked."

McDonnell disclosed his continued effort to secure an agreement during a news conference in which he was asked to comment on this week’s opinion from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli that police in Virginia may inquire about the immigration status of people they stop or arrest.

The governor said Cuccinelli’s opinion generally tracked one McDonnell issued as attorney general in 2007.

Under current Virginia law, law enforcement officers are required to inquire about the immigration status of all persons taken to jail for another suspected crime.

Sen. Cuccinelli (R-VA)?

Bearing Drift’s Alan Moore speculates that we could be seeing Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli running for Jim Webb’s Senate seat in 2012.  I don’t think so.  The very traits that have made Cuccinelli such a star AG in his first year would go to waste in the US Senate.  Cuccinelli was a solid legislator, but not a star.  Allowed to run his own shop in the AG’s office have allowed Cuccinelli to come into his own.

I can see Cuccinelli running for governor in 2013, but not running for the US Senate.  If he ran, he would certainly be a favorite.  However, I can then envisage a miserable Sen. Cuccinelli.  OR … perhaps we would get another Jim DeMint.

Hurt Opens Up 23 Point Lead On Perriello

In a SurveyUSA poll taken for Roanoke’s WDBJ-TV, Virginia Senator Bob Hurt has a 58% – 35% lead over incumbent 5th District Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA).

Perriello, who defeated 6-term Republican Virgil Goode by 727 votes in 2008, today trails among most demographic groups. Among men, Hurt leads by 19 points. Among women, Hurt leads by 26. White voters back Hurt 2:1; black voters back Perriello 2:1. Twice as many Democrats cross over to vote Republican as Republicans who cross over to vote Democrat. Independents break Republican. Perriello runs most strongly among Democrats, African Americans, liberals, moderates, those who have unfavorable opinions of the Tea Party movement, among pro-choice voters, and among those who do not own guns … each of which is today a minority among likely voters in VA’s 5th district.

The composition of likely voters for this survey is 42% Republican, 27% Democratic. This composition reflects an energized Republican base and an enthusiasm gap for Democrats, evident in SurveyUSA polling from around the country. If the electorate is more Democratic than shown in SurveyUSA’s model here, the Republican still wins, though his margin of victory is less. For example, if hypothetically there were an even number of Democrats and Republicans in the likely voter model, Republican challenger Hurt wins today by 11 points, not 23.

Griffith To The Rescue?

9th District Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA) has been an anomaly for quite some time.  A liberal in a representing a right of center district, Boucher has kept his seat by bringing home the bacon and because he seldom has strong opponents..  Yesterday, Bearing Drift’s Ward Smythe asked whether or not Virginia House Majority Leader  Morgan Griffith can overcome Boucher’s incumbency and large cash balance.

ABSOLUTELY!  Boucher’s support of “Cap and Tax” should really win him him friends in the coalfields.  Plus, if the national anti-incumbency vibe translates to the “Fightin’ 9th” (and it should), the GOP has a great shot.

Boucher’s campaign definitely seems to be feeling the pressure.  If this Tweet is any indication, and if Griffith continues running a strong campaign, it very well could be “Bye Bye Boucher”.

People inside the Boucher campaign are painting a VERY negative picture. This isn’t the way to motivate volunteers.

McDonnell Turns Deficit Into Surplus

July 15, 2010 by Cato
Filed under Fiscal Policy, Virginia, Virginia Politics

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has managed to finish out the fiscal year with a $220 million surplus versus the projected #1.8 billion deficit projected when McDonnell entered office in January.

Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that the Commonwealth of Virginia has posted a preliminary revenue surplus at the conclusion of the 2010 fiscal year on June 30th. The Governor estimated the surplus, after miscellaneous interest payments are distributed, will be at least $220 million. The primary source of the surplus comes from individual withholding and non-withholding and corporate income tax receipts. As of January, the Commonwealth faced a $1.8 billion budget shortfall for the remainder of FY 2010. Working together, Governor McDonnell and the General Assembly closed this shortfall during the 2010 legislative session.

New Jersey’s Chris Christie can do it.  Bob McDonnell sure can.  Why can’t the Dems in DC get a grip on their budget?  Hell, they won’t even pass a budget!
