Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore has been named as the new President and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation. The foundation, and its predecessors have been a key part of the conservative movement.

Gilmore was governor from 1998 to 2002. He was chairman of the Republican National Committee for 10 months in 2000-2001. Gilmore ran for the U.S. Senate in 2008 and lost to Democrat Mark R. Warner, who had succeeded Gilmore as governor.

Mark Warner must not be too proud of the things he, and the Democrat party, stand for. Why then has Warner not only refused to take part in the traditional League of Women Voters debate, but he has canceled a scheduled debate before federal retirees in Hampton?
Don’t Virginians have the right to see the two major candidates to replace retiring Sen. John Warner (no relation) before choosing the best candidate? Perhaps that is why Mark Warner doesn’t want the public to see him answer direct questions.
Mark Warner already fooled Virginians once by claiming that he wouldn’t raise taxes. It will be a little difficult for him to try the same “trust me” routine again.

…Mark Warner wants to strip workers of the secret ballot.
Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner has refused to publicly affirm his support of the so-called “Employee Free Choice Act”. Fortunately for Virginians, Warner was caught on video affirming his support for a bill which would strip workers of their current right to have a secret ballot in elections to decide union representation.

Jim Gilmore for Senate has put up a page which is a one-stop shop for the info we discussed in a previous post on how Mark Warner deceived (and continues deceiving) Virginians when it comes to taxes. Mark Warner just hopes that not many Virginia voters bother checking out the facts.

Jim Hoeft of Bearing Drift has presented what is probably the best explanation of how Mark Warner hosed Virginians with a tax increase. Sure, we’ve all seen the video. We’ve all heard Warner explain it away.
The bottom line is that Warner not only raised taxes, he new he didn’t have to. His own Secretary of Finance told him that revenue was on the rise. That didn’t matter.
Warner wanted to spend and like a good Democrat he knows how to raise taxes. Reminds me of Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and his “structural deficit” excuse to raise taxes in the People’s Republic.
Does anyone actually believe that a Sen. Mark Warner could say no to more fiscal shenanigans in Washington?

Blueweeds is whining about Jim Gilmore’s term as Governor. He even infers that he has to pay the car tax because of Gilmore.
Let’s see ….
Gilmore is the man responsible for repealing the car tax. Mark Warner is responsible for keeping it.
Gilmore balanced the budget while cutting taxes. Mark Warner pledged not to raise taxes and then did so.
While I wasn’t a huge fan of Gilmore personally, I had to respect his tenure as Governor. When Warner rode into Richmond he whined and tried to blame his predecessors because he was bound and determined to spend the taxpayers’ money like a drunken sailor.

Since I wasn’t at the Homestead for today’s debate (and there was no live C-SPAN coverage), I’ll have to depend on press and blog accounts like everyone else. Shad Plank calls the debate a push. I was a bit disappointed that the Daily Press criticized Gilmore for lacking specificity on non-drilling energy policy while refusing to discuss the trust issue.
Mark Warner has no shame when it comes to flip-flopping on the citizens of Virginia. The people of Virginia can’t afford Mark Warner and sure shouldn’t trust him.

As we await today’s debate between former Virginia Governors Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore, we have to ask – Which Mark Warner will we see today?
Virginia’s media loves this guy almost as much as Barack Obama.
