Delaware’s Profile Soaring … Is That A Good Thing?

nemski at DelawareLiberal seems to think so but does Delaware really need  Vice President Joe Biden as the unofficial First State poster child?  Biden makes George W Bush look like the chairman of the Oxford Union.  While Gov. Jack Markell is governing far more responsibly than many of us thought he would, both Markell and Delaware have a ways to go to repair the damage done by previous administrations.

nemski is right about one thing – you really should read this article from the Wilmington News-Journal.  Then ask yourself if these supposed “men of the people” are really good for the image of the First State?

Delaware River Channel Project to Move Forward

Gov. Jack Markell and the state of Delaware finally appear to be doing the right thing by reaching a compromise in the US Army Corps of Engineers attempt to deepen the Delaware River channel.  By admitting that the Minner administration had acted improperly by sitting on the Corps’ request for five years, the Markell administration is able to assert the state’s rights to regulate certain portions of the project while not buckling to the left wing enviros who wish to harm the vital river ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia.

Laster Appointed to Chancery Court

David Anderson over at Delaware Politics is giving Delaware Gov. Jack Markell’s appointment of Wilmington attorney J. Travis Laster to Delaware’s Court of Chancery a lukewarm reception.  I can’t argue with Anderson that it appears to be a “safe choice”.  However, Laster appears to be well qualified and the Court of Chancery is the primary reason why Delaware is the state of choice for so many corporations.

What Is An “Economic Ombudsman”

Fresh on the heels of re-organizing the Delaware Economic Development Office (and probably not for the better), Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has now appointed an “Economic Ombudsman”.

Given that this position is simply adding an additional title, and duties, to Deputy Legal Counsel Cleon Cauley, Sr., and that the position has no budget, what is it expected to accomplish?  Is Markell simply paying lip service to much needed economic development?

For our liberal friends in the First State, don’t simply dismiss this as a right wing criticism of Markell.  When he’s done right, we’ve said so.  I simply believe that economic development is something that Delaware can’t afford to play around with.

Markell Eliminates Outdated Jury Commissioner System

Sometimes I wonder if Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is a closet schizophrenic.  A darling of Delaware’s left, Markell also keeps moving Delaware towards a leaner, more efficient system of state government.

Case in point, last week Markell announced an elimination of the First State’s outdated jury commissioner system.  Admittedly, this will only save Delaware taxpayers about $15,000 per year.  Doesn’t matter.  Every little bit helps.

Now, if we can just get him to be more efficient on the big items, Markell might just be on to something.

Jack Markel Reorganizes Economic Development Office

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has announced a reorganization of the Delaware Economic Development Office (DEDO).  With all due respect Gov. Markell, what are you doing?

The recent problems that Delaware has faced in terms of economic development have nothing do how DEDO is organized.  Bad fiscal policy?  Yes.  Higher taxes?  Sure.

I know that Markell is the darling of Delaware’s left, but simply moving pins on a map or changing the org chart isn’t going to fix Delaware’s problems.  Give Pet DuPont a call.  Find out out Delaware really became an economic engine.

How Can You Grow An Economy By Cutting Energy Consumption?

August 3, 2009 by Cato

I’m a conservative.  Therefore I’m in favor of conservation.  Unfortunately, the left isn’t in favor of conserving energy.  They are in favor of cutting our consumption of energy.

What’s the difference?  Adopting policies that will encourage each individual, family or business to reduce their total energy consumption is conserving.  Passing laws mandating that we will cut our TOTAL energy consumption is just crazy.

Case in point – Delaware’s SB106.  This masterpiece of liberal “group think” requires Delaware utilities to cut their consumption by 15% by 2015.  I know, it sounds great.  Wind… Solar … No Nukes and rolling blackouts.

How does Gov. Jack Markell expect to attract new industry to the First State when Delawareans will be forced to pay more for electrical power than their neighbors?  Don’t bank on “Cap and Tax” delivering a more even playing field Jack.  Before people’s rates double, the Dems will be out of power and that farce will be repealed.

Delaware will be stuck with a stagnant economy and you’ll be wondering why.

Jack Markell to Cut Number of State Vehicles

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has announced that he will be cutting the use of state owned vehicles by 20%:

On Thursday, Markell announced a 20 percent reduction in state-vehicle usage, an end to state-funded travel and a new energy usage policy for state buildings that alters temperature settings. The three policy changes are estimated to generate about $1.3 million in savings.

If Markell even attains half that goal he is to be commended.  Most taxpayers have little idea how many of their tax dollars are spent on just the perk of government employees using taxpayer funded vehicles as their own personal transportation.  In Maryland the amount has to be staggering.
