RedState Is Wrong on Health Care Co-ops

I hate to disagree with Erick Erickson over at RedState.  He’s usually right, and has been kind enough to link to several posts of mine in the past (which is far better than receiving a gold star from the teacher in first grade).  Unfortunately, Erick’s attack on the Heritage Foundation and his stance against health care co-ops simply doesn’t fly.

What Heritage is claiming about co-ops is right on.  Co-ops (true, regional co-ops, not a “public option” given a more politically safe name) could be a viable solution (but certainly not a silver bullet) in reforming our health care system.  And make no mistake; we do need reform.

Some of the solutions conservatives have put forward regarding health care reform include:

  • Tort Reform

  • Insurance Portability Across State Lines

  • An end to individual state mandates regarding health insurance

  • Allow the purchasing of health insurance policies across state lines

  • Allow small businesses to form purchasing groups

  • An expansion of Health Savings Accounts

  • ……

Co-ops can be part of the solution in portability and buying across state lines.  Already, multi-state employers are allowed to provide insurance to employees from outside the state of issuance.  Why not individuals?

Will Obama Tell the COMPLETE Truth on Taxes

September 10, 2008 by Cato

Is Barack Obama capable of speaking the full truth on anything?  He certainly can’t when it comes to taxes.  Speaking in Norfolk, Obama claimed that the Heritage Foundation said that “average Americans would pay less” under his plan:

Is that REALLY what the Heritage Foundation said?  No!

Mr. Hederman (of Heritage) said the middle class would likely pay less under Mr.
Obama’s plan than Mr. McCain’s but that the Democrat was excessively
reliant on complicated tax breaks that would make the tax code more
confusing. “Instead of a grab bag of tax credits, lower the marginal
rates,” Mr. Hederman said.

This is particularly amusing since it is liberals like Obama who oppose market based initiatives like school vouchers and health savings accounts by giving as one reason that the average American isn’t bright enough to understand the complexities.  I’ve got a health savings account, and I send my kids to private school.  TRUST ME, dealing with these are a lot simpler than the IRS code!

While Obama’s tax plan could, in theory, provide slightly more tax relief – will most Americans receive the full advantage of such a plan?  Liberals certainly don’t think so!  That’s why we need the nanny state.
