Barrie Comegys Party Wants to Waste More Tax Dollars

When will they ever learn? The Barrie Comegys bloc on Salisbury’s city council wants to throw more tax dollars (potentially millions more) down the drain. Since Mayor Jim Ireton vetoed their attempt to take a notorious property owner off of the hook for cleanup, their response was tried and true (at least in Democrat circles) – they played the race card.
BARRIE COMEGYS WANTS YOUR MONEY
I understand the argument for acquiring the Lake Street property. It could serve as a means to jump start the proposed North Prong redevelopment project. As someone who supports redevelopment of the North Prong (just not the ham fisted Barrie Comegys approach), acquiring the property could have some merit.
However, to call this property a “brown field” is probably being generous. Given that no one has any idea what kind of clean-up problems will be encountered if the city took possession of the property, it makes good sense to find out BEFORE the city is on the hook. In fact, Councilwoman Terry Cohen made such a specific motion to amend the agreement before council last Monday. Councilman Gary Comegys stated that he would support such an amendment ONLY IF it did not stop the city from acquiring the land. Councilwomen Louise Smith and Shanie Shields (the other two legs of the Barrie Comegys Party stool on the Salisbury council) also voted down the amendment.
Let’s try this again. NO ONE knows what the clean-up will cost. It may me $10,000. It could be $1 MILLION! For all anyone knows, it could be more. YET, Comegys stated that it was more important to acquire this piece of land. Basically, the Barrie Comegys position is that this land is worth ANY PRICE.
Why not? The taxpayers are footing the bill.

We all know that Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley thinks that taxpayers exist merely to be squeezed to pay for more wasteful spending. But what about St. Marty, the champion of the poor and the oppressed? Of course that must be true. He is a Democrat after all.
We need to remember that O’Malley is a politician, first and foremost. He’d probably sell his kids for the right number of votes, so kicking poor people out of their homes is a walk in the park if you want to be governor.
That’s what happened in Baltimore under Mayor O’Malley. Using federal tax dollars to dismantle public housing, rather than improve it, O’Malley forced poor city dwellers out of their homes in an attempt to reduce crime. Then O’Malley pretended shock when courts forced the counties to pick up the slack.
Now O’Malley is the guardian of over $44 million in new federal housing money. Let’s see what he does now.

Slumlords Endorse Comgys for Mayor, Boda and Shields for Council

Salisbury’s leading slumlord, Richard Insley, has prepared his biennial tenant’s letter for distribution by SAPOA. Support Gary Comegys for Mayor or you will be homeless. Vote for Muir Boda and Shanie Shields for city council or we’ll raise your rents. That is the clear implication of a letter prepared by Insley for use by SAPOA’s membership.
Why should the city’s renters have safe, affordable housing when it’s cheaper to buy a city government? On a trip to northeast Baltimore County last week I noticed that comparable units were running $100 – $200 per month cheaper than the advertised rates here in Salisbury. Multiply that by the number of rental units in Salisbury and the math is pretty simple.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) claims that the pork-laden, slush fund recently passed by Congress is needed to help stabilize the U.S. economy. Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that PG County, which is partly in Hoyer’s district, make up 30% of Maryland foreclosures. Nor does it matter that this bill will funnel billions to left wing groups and politically friendly contractors.

As details of the $4 Billion slush fund pushed through the House by Nancy Pelosi become public, our collective stomachs should churn. Built in to this growing carbuncle are slop for an ever-growing group of pigs at the tax-funded trough.
Left-wing groups like Acorn and LaRaza will be beneficiaries of supposed spending on “affordable housing”. Well-connected developers will rake in plenty of cash as well.
With groups like Acorn and LaRaza involved, this is a true liberal jackpot. Use taxpayer dollars to register illegal aliens to vote, then provide them with cheap housing to insure their allegiance to the Democrat party.
It almost makes you understand why GOP pols like Tom DeLay, Roy Blunt, and John Boehner thought that the GOP could abandon its principles and buy their way to a permanent majority – with our money.

The Heritage Foundation outlines a $4 Billion slush fund that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her cohorts want included in any proposed bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This is just what we need – more layers of government to solve a problem caused by government.
The proposed fund is supposedly so that local governments can purchase foreclosed properties. Think about this for a moment. When was the last time that you visited government-owned housing that you wanted to live in.
What will be the net result? Block-busting in reverse! This isn’t a racial issue. We won’t be witnessing white flight, but the flight of all those who work hard and want to live in clean, safe neighborhoods.

Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman’s “State of the City” address on Monday provided us with a glimpse of how a truly devious mind works. For several years Tilghman and her “Dream Team” promoted the idea of a revitalization of the “North Prong” area of the city. The unstated goal has seems to be the gentrification of the West Side of Salisbury. To those of you not familiar with the term, gentrification usually has the end affect of driving the poor black folks (and Latinos) out and replacing them with nice, well coiffed white folk.
To date Tilghman and her minions have been unsuccessful in their pursuit. Their desire to subsidize developers through a Community Development Corporation (CDC) have been a bust. Too many of the unwashed see it for what it is (a bureaucratic boondoggle designed to consolidate Tilghman’s power while funneling city funds to her friends). The state has, so far, refused to fund Tilghman’s attempts to push a large portion of the minority community out of the city. Oh, what to do?
To get around this little problem Tilghman has devised a brilliant solution! The North Prong project is no long an economic development issue. It is now an “environmental disaster”! Tilghman is now seeking federal funds, with the help of Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (?-MD). Read more

February 26, 2008 by Cato

Since the first Clinton administration, “It’s for the children.”, has reigned as the all purpose cover-up for wasting taxpayers’ money. With their backs up against the wall, again, Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman’s “council leadership” of Louise Smith, Gary Comegys and Shanie Shields plucked the taxpayer yet again crying, “It’s for the seniors!”. The infamous Sassafras Meadows property received another $320,000 subsidy from Salisbury’s citizens.
Isn’t affordable housing for Salisbury’s seniors important? Of course it is. When other projects come before Salisbury council you probably won’t here a peep from citizens. But you need to remember that the citizens of Salisbury have now agreed to pay out over $1 million in subsidies to this one parcel.
“Wait, I read that the subsidy was only $287,000!” That’s what you read the Daily Times. It’s not inaccurate, but it only tell part of the story.
The Tilghman administration, with the consent of Comegys, Shields, and the balance of the old “Dream Team”, borrowed almost $900,000 to reimburse the owners of the Sassafras Meadows parcel for running water and sewer out to the property. REMEMBER, the agreement to give the property water and sewer was based on the promise that almost 300 units of affordable senior housing would be built. The developers simply took a big bag of cash from the city and left town. Read more
