Who’s Your Corporate Daddy

Barack Obama lectures the Supreme Court (and lies while doing so). Lefties throughout the land whine about “special interest” money. Maryland Dem chairwoman Susan Turnbull even has the gall to rail against the “Citizens United” decision. Yet, MDDEM’s couldn’t survive without corporate and union cash.
Maryland Democrats … How’s that hypocrisy thing going?
Thanks to Red Maryland for this excellent video.

Much has already been written about Saturday morning’s Salisbury town hall meeting held by Del. Norm Conway (D-38B) and Del. Jim Mathias (D-38B). Michael Swartz of Monoblogue provides a very factual, blow-by-blow account. Julie Brewington of Right Coast Girl weighs in with a little more opinion. My friend Joe Albero, uncharacteristically, is taking a “can’t we all get along” approach.
There are two things that almost everyone seems to agree on. One is that we appreciate Conway and Mathias taking time to meet with constituents. Yes, I know it’s an election year AND that it’s part of their job. Yet, not every member of the legislature takes the time. The second thing is that both Conway and Mathias are “good guys”. I concur. Wicomico County Exec Rick Pollitt is a “good guy”; so is Councilmen John Cannon and Dave MacLeod. Councilwoman Sheree Sample-Hughes is a “good person”. Hell, I’m sure there are even a few people who like Salisbury Councilwoman Louise Smith and Wicomico Councilman Bill McCain. Regardless, taxpayers need to ask themselves if they can afford to continue supporting these “good guys”.
BIG GOVERNMENT CONSERVATIVES?

President Barack Obama will be paying a visit to Baltimore Friday. Obama is scheduled to visit an unidentified small business and address a retreat of House Republicans. Given that Congressional Dems seem to lock the GOP out of everything meaningful going on in Congress, I thought it was mighty kind of the Republicans to invite the left’s once upon a time messiah.
I was wondering if Obama was going to hand out any “cash from his stash” while visiting Charm City.
Coons “All In” for Biden’s Senate Seat

Delaware Liberal reports that New Castle County Executive Christopher Coons has confirmed that he will seek the Democrat nomination for the Senate seat previously held by VP Joe Biden. Since Biden’s son, Delaware AG Beau Biden, announced earlier this week that he will not run, Delaware Dems have been seeking a body to rally around.
According to Delaware Liberal, “we need to be ‘all in’” in order to beat the GOP standard bearer, Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE). Fine by me. Delaware is hardly the “bluest of blue” states. Mike Castle is hardly the heir to Reagan. I hope Coons (or whoever gets the Delaware Dem nod) runs hard to the left.
How’s that Obama thing working out for you guys in the First State?

Wye Mills resident Chris Jakubiak has announced his candidacy for the Maryland Senate. Jakubiak, a Democrat, will challenge incumbent Maryland Sen. Richard Colburn (R-37).
Jakubiak is the owner of an Annapolis planning firm which consults with local governments statewide. Jakubiak is probably best known to Lower Shore voters as the planner responsible for negotiating annexation agreements for the city of Salisbury.
Jakubiak casts himself as “independent”. He also claims that, "State government should be lean, effective, pragmatic and affordable," This is interesting given his own party’s overwhelming lock on the legislature and the fact that only one Republican has been elected governor in his lifetime (Jakubiak was born after Spiro Agnew’s election in 1966). I guess Jakubiak thinks that Republicans are responsible for Maryland committing to spending more money than it takes in. How about O’Malley’s 20% hike in the state sales tax? Did Andy Harris, Lowell Stoltzfus, and the other GOP members of the legislature put O’Govenor up to that one?
.To be fair, Jakubiak has seemed to do an adequate job for the taxpayers of Salisbury. However, Jakubiak’s work for Salisbury has received an unusual amount of scrutiny . It should be remembered that Jakubiak received his contract with the city AFTER cozying up to then city councilman Mike Dunn and even purchasing “underwriting” (advertising) on the stations Dunn sells for. There’s also the question of Jakubiak being paid by the very developers that he’s supposed to be garnering concessions from (technically, the money funnels through the city’s coffers before hitting Jakubiak’s pocket).
Good luck Chris. It seems like you’re trying to sound like Frank Kratovil circa 2008. He promised to be “independent” too … right up to when he voted for Pelosi for Speaker and then gave Barack Obama his vote for PORKULUS.

It doesn’t appear that Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will be able to skate to next November’s general election unscathed. According to Julie Bykowicz at the Baltimore Sun’s Maryland Politics Blog, O’Malley will have a primary challenge – former House Majority Whip and Secretary of Veterans Affairs George W. Owings, III. Both Bykowicz and the Gazette’s Alan Brody report that Owings will officially announce his candidacy on January 6th in Prince Frederick.
Will Owings present a formidable challenge to the lefty darling O’Malley? It’s too early to tell. However, Owings, a Calvert County Democrat, will be able to draw support from a sizable number of moderate – conservative Democrats who share Owings’ disdain for the fiscal shenanigans Marylanders have witnessed under O’Malley’s (lack of) stewardship.
Self identified “progressives” love O’Malley and seem to think that everyone opposed to his Obamanite policies is some right wing Republican. If they bothered to talk to a few folks in groups like Americans for Prosperity or even at Tea Party rallies, they might be shocked to discover how many are registered Democrats.

Will the messiah help Virginia gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds make up ground in his uphill battle against GOP candidate Bob McDonnell? I doubt it. However, if by some strange turn of fate Deeds does become Virginia’s next governor, Obama will certainly take credit. If he loses …
At this point, Deeds needs something big. He appears willing to try anything.

Democrats, and their cohorts in the media, love to accuse Republicans of “going negative” and “not talking about the issues”; that is, until issues aren’t on their side. Two cases in point – the New Jersey and Virginia governors’ races.
New Jersey -
Gov. John Corzine (D-NJ) has a record that any self-respecting politician would be ashamed of. Unemployment is the highest it’s been in a generation. Property taxes are spiraling out of control. Is Corzine talking about how he’ll help make New Jersey better IF voters are stupid enough to re-elect him? Absolutely not!

This morning I was torn as to whether or not I would buy a copy of this morning’s Washington Post. However, as I glanced at the front page of the Outlook section I saw that my old friend Frank Atkinson had an op-ed. Case closed.
Besides being a genuinely good guy, Frank is one of the sharpest minds of his generation. Phi Beta Kappa at Richmond, Order of the Coif at Virginia Law, an early member of the Federalist Society, a veteran of the Reagan Justice Department and counselor to Gov. George Allen, Frank is a top notch constitutional lawyer and the author of two books.
His analysis of this fall’s statewide campaign is excellent, if slightly flawed. Atkinson begins his op-ed by quoting the great Guy Friddell:

Free Speech Only Applies to the Left

When Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) held a meeting with constituents last Friday the meeting was civil. Given the leftward leanings of Van Hollen’s district that should be expected. One question posed by a bastion of the government class:
when medical industry lobbyists might be banned from trying to sink reform
Van Hollen diplomatically responded that there was a little thing called “free speech”:
"There are constitutional issues here," he said. "You can’t say people can’t advertise on TV."
Oh yes you can, at least if you are a statist like Van Hollen, Barack Obama, or their pal Frank Kratovil. Why did the networks refuse to run the commercial below? There certainly aren’t any fighting words in those 30 seconds. You might want to argue over the facts (I think they’re spot on), but isn’t that what a civil debate is about?
Free speech exists. If you adhere to the left wing orthodoxy of people like Chris Van Hollen. if not, expect to be attacked … or silenced.
