Wicomico County Executive Richard M. Pollitt, Jr., has accepted the resignation of Douglas C. Devenyns as Director of the Wicomico County Department of Corrections effective November 6, 2009.
Mr. Pollitt expressed appreciation to Mr. Devenyns for his 12 years of service to Wicomico County and said that, “I am considering several potential candidates for the position of Interim Director of Corrections and shall soon begin an extensive search for a permanent replacement for Mr. Devenyns.”
In June, Mr. Devenyns was congratulated by the U.S. Department of Justice (D.O.J.) for bringing the Corrections Department into compliance with all provisions of a settlement agreement reached in 2004 with the D.O.J. Chief among the areas noted for improvement was inmate health care.
During his tenure, Mr. Devenyns initiated several successful inmate improvement programs. Among these were the RSAT and SIT programs, both aimed at reducing recidivism. Mr. Devenyns also introduced the granting of hazardous duty pay and video bail bonding. He also served as the president of the Maryland Corrections Administrator’s Association.
