Political Patronage on Steroids

The left and their media buddies had no problem screaming that Bob Ehrlich shouldn’t be allowed to make “at will” hires if that means firing a Democrat. Of course that standard doesn’t apply to Gov. Martin O’Malley.

We are now informed by “O’Malley Watch” that O’Malley’s Commissioner of Labor was forced to resign his union leadership position under the pressure of a DOJ probe into the Union’s (Local 37 of the International Union of Operating Engineers) activity. Are appoints of convicted gangsters to run the State Police next?

Show Me The Money Barrie!

At Monday’s Salisbury Council meeting the now infamous Marley Manor lift station reared it’s ugly head again. If you will recall, the Barrie Tilghman administration (Councilman Gary Comegys and Councilwoman Shanie Shields) borrowed $1.2 million for the “developer reimbursement” of the lift station. Does Salisbury Really Need A City Attorney?

September 25, 2007 by Cato · 5 Comments
Filed under: Development, Maryland, Salisbury Politics

The taxpayers of Salisbury could be save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year by simply eliminating the position of city attorney.

How can I make such a claim? Simple. At Monday’s council meeting we were treated to yet more evidence that the current City Attorney, Paul Wilber, cannot make a decision without the prior approval of Mayor Barrie Tilghman.

During the discussion of an annexation requested by gold star certified Friend of Barrie Tom Ruark a question arose as to whether the city council could finish the public hearing portion of the annexation process and delay a vote pending additional public comment and study by the council. Mr. Wilber obviously did not have prior instruction from Mayor Tilghman and had to “wing it”. At this time Mr. Wilber gave the council what appears to be faulty advice. Read more

Does Salisbury Really Need Police Substations?

September 22, 2007 by Cato · 7 Comments

In Thursday’s Tilghman Times, Salisbury Police Chief makes an excellent argument for shutting down police substations in Salisbury and replacing them with a “mobile substation”. On Friday, we were treated to a letter to the editor from Mr. David Ganoe applauding the Salisbury PD for its “mobile substation”. Bill Duvall admits that Webster’s argument is so persuasive as to make the debate over the closing of the Smith and Cecil Street substations virtually a “no-brainer”.

Mr. Duvall follows up with the very prescient question, “What am I missing?”

What he and many others are missing is the disingenuousness of Chief Webster’s argument. IF Webster’s argument were sound, why is the city keeping the Church Street substation open? IF Webster’s argument were sound, why are there not more police truly on the streets versus merely driving around in patrol cars?

1980’s Redux - Higher Taxes in Maryland

It’s for the children… or the deficit…. or something else.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley wants to increase the sales tax by 20% (plus add more items that are subject to the tax such as property management, better known as rent). He wants to increase the state income tax on individuals and corporations, always a great economic development tool. No gas tax increase announced yet, but January is a long way off.

Do we really need these tax increases? Of course not. Read more

Ghost of Hearne Haunts Gary Comegys

September 20, 2007 by Cato · 3 Comments
Filed under: Development, Maryland, Neighborhoods, Salisbury Politics

Buried in the middle of the agenda for today’s meeting of the Salisbury - Wicomico County Planning and Zoning Commission is the following item:

REVISED FINAL COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT PLAN – CDW Salisbury Holdings LLC, represented by Davis, Bowen & Friedel – South Division Street - LBI and R-8A Residential District - #SP-0601-07A;
M-48, P-211, 214, 215, 425, G-8, (G. Smith)

What, pray tell, could this be? It’s the ghost of Hearne. The now infamous annexation of the former Hearne property fronting S. Division Street and Dykes Road in Salisbury. The proposed development was christened “The Orchard” and was promised to be an “upscale” development geared towards the over-55 crowd. Read more

Hagel to Retire

September 12, 2007 by Cato · 1 Comment

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) has announced his retirement. While Democrats hope that former Sen. Bob Kerrey can move back from New York and take the seat, his star will probably rise and fall depending on how bloody the GOP primary becomes.

As for Sen. Hagel - Good riddance to bad rubbish.
