Former Speaker and conservative ideologue Newt Gingrich has made it official. He will not seek the GOP Presidential nomination for 2008.
Gingrich maintains that he can do more good for the country as chairman of “American Solutions”, his non-profit arm, than as a candidate. According to a spokesman, “It is legally impermissible for him to continue on as chairman of American Solutions (for Winning the Future) and to explore a campaign for president”.
It is probably true that Gingrich will accomplish more with American Solutions than as a candidate. The corporatist tilt of the national GOP makes national campaigns difficult for true Reaganites such as Gingrich or Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA). We began to see this tilt to the party in 1996 when Sen. Phil Gramm’s (R-TX) campaign was unable to gain traction and former Rep. Jack Kemp (R-NY) refused to enter the race.
