Bigot?
I just noticed Bill Duvall’s little tirade about my piece concerning Idaho Sen. Larry Craig. While I welcome criticism (I actually love it), I prefer that such criticism actually attack MY ARGUMENTS rather than building a straw man and attempting to tear it down.
I called people who attack folks for simply being gay bigots. Bill argues that I called people who disagree with my views on Sen. Craig’s situation bigots.
I argue that the evidence of Craig soliciting sex in an airport men’s room is non-existent (the police claim that Craig flashed some “gay hand signals”). Bill argues that “my knickers are in a twist” because the evidence has not been disclosed.
I don’t make any argument as to Sen. Craig’s guilt or innocence; only the lack of evidence (as provided by the Minnesota authorities). Bill claims that I have made some “extra-judicial judgment” has to Craig’s guilt or innocence.
The bottom line is pretty simple. Claiming that a GOP politician is gay, particularly a conservative one, is like calling a Democrat presidential hopeful pro-life. Before the press rips this guy’s life apart they ought to have a little more than supposed hand signals and some innuendo. Now if Craig has gay bashed (which he has been accused of) and is closeted, if there is substantial evidence that he is on the down-low rip him to shreds for being a hypocrite - not for being gay.
On a more amusing note, how can I be a “right wing kook” and oppose burning Craig at the stake (at least until we see some real evidence)? It is in the by-laws of the American Union of Right Wing Kooks that all homosexuals should be castrated (if male) and then stoned to death in the public square. I think “wetbacks” are included in that section too Bill.
