Now What Will Barrie’s Excuse Be?

Barrie Tilghman loves to hold press conferences and refuse to answer questions from the public or from those “scurrilous bloggers” because she is only “taking questions from the media”. Well it looks like she’ll have to come up with a better excuse now; thanks to her buddies at Miles & Stockbridge and Chief Allan Webster.

In their zeal to sue Joe Albero they are asking some rather stupid questions. Some of the Chief’s interrogatories ask for the names of Joe’s sources. Lo and behold, Maryland has a press shield law. Section 9-112 of the Maryland Code for Courts and Judicial Proceedings defines “news media” as:

(1) Newspapers; (2) Magazines; (3) Journals; (4) Press associations; (5) News agencies; (6) Wire services; (7) Radio; (8) Television; and (9) Any printed, photographic, mechanical or electronic means of disseminating news and information to the public.

I don’t believe that even Salisbury City Attorney Paul Wilber would argue that this means blogs are not considered part of the news media by the state of Maryland.

My suggestion to the public is for everyone to sign up for a Blogger account and when Barrie refuses to answer your question at the next press conference because you’re “not a member of the media”, remind her what the law says. My guess is that she’ll waste some more tax dollars by having Paul Wilber “opine” that blogs only count as media when you are being sued by the Mayor or one of her lackeys.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems that by the above statement you are shielded by the Maryland Law as “press” in not having to reveal your sources. However in the interview with the Daily Slime on 8/19, the article states:

“He also rebuffs the notion he’s a ‘citizen journalist.’

“The blog site—hence the word ‘blog’– is a personal opinion,” he said. “I’m not paid to deliver, technically speaking, the factual news. I do my very best to do so, but the photos, the documents, the video clips on my site, those pretty much tell the story.”

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t seem like you can have it both ways and it may bite you in the bum if you try. While much of it is obviously personal opinion about those you clearly dislike (and some you do like), many articles/blog statements are clearly portrayed as “news”.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a daily reader of your blog, even though I live outside the city limits (thank goodness!) and have enjoyed and been amused by much of it.

Well, gosh and golly, Joe’s news media! And so are you, Cato! We can all breathe easier under our guarantees of anonymity. And welcome to the Fourth Estate, guys!

I guess you see why Paul Wilbur isn’t able to make a living in private practice and must slop at the trough of Barrieville by selling his soul to her majesty. I’ve lost count of the number of incorrect “opinions” he has pontificated at council meetings, he would be broke if he wasnt a city paid attorney. Here’s the story -of a bunch of morons-who swapped their souls for Barries’ free lunch. They were spineless, without a conscience- that’s the way they all became the Barrie Bunch.

I didn’t catch it on the TV broadcast, but during the meeting on Monday didn’t Barrie say that she has an opinion by Wilber that she can veto resolutions by the Council — it sounded like she was trying to close down Ms. Cohen who seems to think that Barrie can’t do that.

Maybe we will get to see that opinion (Ha-ha, its probably been marked “privileged and confidential” by now). If it comes down to Wilber against Cohen, I’ll go with her as the winner, just like that Circuit Court case on the old mall rezoning last year.

Barrie could get an opinion out of Wilber that says the moon’s made out of granola bits. Is the Council still being denied the monthly accounting of how much the city’s paying him?

I mentioned years ago that a list of transgressions be written down and organized in a clear legible format.

In other words, every time the mayor, police chief, zoo official or other government official engages in questionable activities it should be recorded by name, date, pictures, video, evidence; and why the particular activity is either illegal, a conflict of interest, or against the public good, etc in a clear format that should be put on the internet.

The most important aspect of this assemblage of information is that it should be without the gossipy ignorance and blame so typical of the Transchoptankia peasants. It should be a straightforward presentation of government indiscretions.

Joe citizen could go to the website, and search a person’s name, or event, or ongoing debacle - all easily arranged and found.

Let me give you peasants an example: A web page with a clickable picture/name of the worst government offenders that then goes to another page that lists in outline form and other clickable links the horrors each has wrought on the comunity.

Has anyone done this? No.

Why? Because simpleness eludes simpletons.
