Vick / Imus - Too Wrongs Don’t Make A Right
Bearing Drift is one of my favorite blogs. It’s one of my key sources for keeping up with what’s going on in the Commonwealth. However, I have to vehemently disagree with them regarding their recent post on the Michael Vick incident.
While I’m no fan of the NAACP (a once great civil rights organization that has largely reduced itself to being little more that a shill for the far left wing of the Democrat party), and there are certainly times when they do vie for the title of “Media Whore”, this certainly doesn’t appear to be one of those times.
According to the CNN story cited by Bearing Drift, R. L. White (president of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP) wasn’t screaming racism. Mr. White wasn’t condoning Vick’s actions or behavior. He just stated that Vick should pay the penalty for his crime and then be able to get on with his career.
White is correct that “he wouldn’t have been persecuted that much had he killed somebody.” Ray Lewis was indicted for murder, may have beat the rap and came back to enjoy an NFL career. Jamal Lewis served time for cocaine distribution and was suspended for all of two games. While I despise the notion of dog fighting, I certainly don’t believe that the crime is worse than dealing drugs.
Personally, I don’t care whether the NFL let’s Vick come back or not. I’m a basketball fan. As a civil libertarian, I don’t agree with the argument that Vick should be banned because of his alleged crimes. Of course I also believe that Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.
When criticizing groups such as the NAACP we should all make sure that there offense is more egregious than stating a rational opinion.
