Bill Gordy Can’t Afford A Car?
Filed under: Fiscal Policy, Maryland, Media, Public Safety, Salisbury Politics
If you are a long time reader, then you know that I am opposed to take home cars for police officers. I’ve heard all of the arguments and a couple of them are actually persuasive. I am just not convinced that the taxpayer is receiving an adequate bang for their buck with this practice. If cops want take home cars, just call them what they are - a fringe benefit. What about cars for firefighters?
Well we all know that Salisbury Fire Chief David See commutes back and forth from Delaware at the expense of the Salisbury taxpayer. Now, thanks to Salisbury News, we know that Volunteer Asst. Chief Bill Gordy is conducting personal business using a city owned Fire Department car.
Let’s see, the taxpayers of Salisbury just got hit with a double-digit tax increase. Taxes are sure to go up in the near future thanks to Barrie Tilghman’s fabulous financial stewardship - a $10 million firehouse, corporate welfare to developers, etc. The city’s police officers and firefighters appear to be underpaid. Infrastructure is allowed to fall into disrepair. But the Mayor and her little group of fiscal hawks seem to feel that it’s a perfectly good use of taxpayer funds to allow a Mr. Gordy to tool around, outside of the city, in a taxpayer owned vehicle?
Don’t expect to read about this one in the “Tilghman Times” either.

From what I understand he is still with the Delmar Vol. Fire Department (Salisbury is just his pay job.) How can you be at two fires at once? What if he has responded to a fire in Deleware, then finds out his services are needed in Salisbury? He would have to leave someone stranded either way. Double Dipping?
My decision to move out of Salisbury validates itself everyday I hear or read the adventures of Salisbury’s elected officials. I moved to Delmar MD in April, and believe me the bad politics of Salisbury was a contributing factor in my decision. I utterly amazed at the degree of imcomptence, ineptness, dishonesty, deception, and non representative style of government voters have allowed to take place in that city. I appreciate DelmarvaDealings & Salisbury News with disclosing the facts and circumstances that we would never hear or read in the Daily Times. Although I probably disagree with the style and method of disagreement that Joe Albero & Cato utilized; I cannot disagree with their true reporting of the facts. Salisbury’s leadership is an embarrassment and all elected officials should be removed; including the Fire & Police Chief.
The damage to this whole area is already done. We see it every day, wells drying up, electric shortages and snarling traffic with crazy angry drivers. Let alone a dysfunctional city administration.
As soon as it is possible I also want to move out of this city and it’s taxes, out of this county and the high piggyback taxes.
Barrie Tilghman is the primary cancer, all the “chiefs” are the metastasis that have spread from her corrupt group of greedy business men and slumlords that she is the puppet for. Why the hell are they spending millions of dollars on a showy firehouse when the city streets are pot-holed, fines are being levied from the MDE because of our obsolete water and sewer, firemen and police are underpaid and overworked, the list goes on and on. Wonder if Gordy is part of the LLC that made a fortune off the firehouse land?
Tim,
When Mr. Gordy moved from Delmar to Salisbury the department’s bylaws required him to be placed on the “Lifetime” honarary list. He very rarely makes any fire calls when he is in town. When he does he responds on the fire equipment of Delmar, not in the city owned vehicle. I know this because I was a member of Delmar when he was still active and for several years there after.
It seems that Mr. Webster has changed his tune from when he defended Barrie against all comers. Although the fire chief and police chief are not “elected officials,” his point is well taken.
However, he should recognize that there are two members of the Council who are not participants in the Barrie Tilghman regime. We are very fortunate that they persist under constant criticism from the Daily Times, which is the major contributing cause of voter apathy becasue it does not report the news but only propaganda (see today’s BS about the enterprise zone tax subsidy).
And I also agree that this blog and others provide a real public service by bringing things before the public.
In the past I was a supporter of Mayor Tilghman,& Mike Dunn but logic, intellect, and undisputable facts surrounding these characters have corrected my ignorance. I used to debate CATO quite vigorsily on his attacks on Salisbury politics. Fortunately for me anaylsis of the facts and true exposure of reality, brought me back to rational thinking. I can’t believe I ever supported the mayor, Mike Dunn or Lynn Cathcart. DelmarvaDealings and SalisburyNews have been a valuable asset on exposing and disclosing the truth the the shady politics of this area. I am man enough to admit my irrational blind support in the past of these idiots. I am now of sound mind and body.
We all will never agree on everything……welcome aboard Bruce. There is a bump in the road here and there, but we hang on to what we believe in, even when I’m wrong. When I find I’m wrong I admit it.
My issue is using my tongue as my sword sometimes, and that should be beneath me, I should use my brain as my sword and am trying harder to do so.
Bruce:
Congrats on the change and candor about same.
Sorry you left us, but understand — I guess with the scam by Louise Smith that you ain’t sorry you did.
With both you and Joe on deck Delmar won’t be the same. One can load while the other fires.
Semper fi!
