More Tax Cutting at the Local Level

Newport News City Council has voted to cut their real property tax rate by $0.10. We know that Fruitland is keeping their tax rate the same, while providing raises for public safety personnel and city employees.
What’s going on in Salisbury? Perhaps their citizens might receive a clue at Monday’s public hearing.

One real difference between Salisbury and Fruitland is that the latter has the “City Manager” system, in which the city is run by a competent professional employee who works closely with the city council, not an elected mayor. That difference is paying big dividends for the residents and other property owners in Fruitland.
I moved from Salisbury to Fruitland a few years ago, shortly after Duke Shannahan ran for mayor but lost, and now wonder why I didn’t do that sooner.
It has been painful to watch as Barrie P. Tilghman has run the City of Salisbury into the ground while the Daily Times continues to support her every move.
I would venture a guess that those towns and counties offering property tax cuts, didn’t borrow their future tax dollars to give away to developers with a nice interest rate attached to them. Only a few nails left, and this coffin will be shut tight.
GOV O’Malley wants to slash the budget $200 million to reduce an impending deficit. He simply told department heads they would be expected to work with what they have, and do a good job of handling it. Maybe if the mayor of Salisbury took that approach we can divert impending doom.
Tough times ahead for all in my opinion.
