VCAP on “Hate Crimes”
VCAP has a great post on HR1592 which adds gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals to the current hate crimes legislation. My views on hate crime legislation are well known, but I believe the concern of certain folks that they won’t be able to say mean things about gay folks is a tad over the top.
Let’s face it, your right to be a bigot is still protected in this country – as long as your speech doesn’t become violent conduct. That is how it should be.
Personally, I just don’t see the thought police dragging some preacher off of the pulpit in cuffs because he or she believes that all homosexuals are going to hell.

That is happening in Canada. And a Christian preacher in Australia has been charged with a crime (hate speech, if I remember correctly) for reading certain passages from the Qur’an from the pulpit.
There is also the recent the case of the “Philadelphia 11″, Christians protesting at a gay rally in Philadelphia and being prosecuted, for peacefully demonstating, under a “hate crimes” law. The link below will lead to an article describing their protest and consequence prosecution:

The club of ‘hate’ crime legislation has been and will be used by the left to beat down any opposition to their agenda. They currently use name-calling, but it hasn’t been as effective as they’d like. Some of us don’t care what they call us.
these laws are part of a concerted effort to eradicate any expression of Christianity from our society.
The laws that have passed and are proposed will be such powerful tools to stifle opposition that the left will find them irresistable- especially those activist judges that look for any excuse to move the society further to the left. They will find broad application, and will become ‘living’ laws, just like our Constitution has sprouted legs and begun to take a left turn.
The Philadelphia 11 are a case in point. What happened to them is shocking, because we are used to protection of our freedom of speech, and they were not being violent, just holding signs. People burn flags in this country and aren’t prosecuted, but a counter demonsration at a gay rally will get you incarcerating in Philadelphia.
The MSM neglect this story because it’s disturbing, as it should be to anyone who thinks this kind of thing can only happen in Europe and Canada. It may come to pass in the near future that wearing a crucifix will be deemed hate speech and being a Christian a hate crime.
