Early Voting Passes
The constitutional amendment to permit early voting appears to have passed the Maryland Senate. The Maryland Democrat Protection Amendment should see an easy passage when it reaches the ballot.

One of my favorite Maryland Dems, Del. Jill Carter (D-41), is calling for “home policing”. This is in response to a Baltimore Examiner article that found only 4% of the top 50 Baltimore City PD commanders actually live in the city. Thanks to P. K. Burns for the insight.
Since Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman is so fond of trying to adopt things from Charm City, why don’t we try this one. If Chief Webster had to live in Salisbury I wonder if the crime rate would be as high.

Monday night WMDT-TV (Channel 47) hosted a debate of all ten candidates for Salisbury City Council. According to reports from inside the closed event Kenny Beck did an excellent job and ran a pretty fair show.
While Mayor Tilghman was an invited guest of the station, she chose not to attend. Instead of the Mayor, candidates and guests were treated to the presence of her spouse, local insurance man Matt Tilghman. Reports from inside the forum were that Mr. Tilghman is as crude as his Mrs. While all guests were asked to be silent during the forum, Mr. Tilghman insisted on testing the extent of his four letter vocabulary and making snide comments about the candidates.
Topics included crime, the old mall TIF, growth and blogs. My sole criticism of Kenny Beck is why waste time on a question about the local blogs. The state of the city’s finances are a far more important topic that needs to be discussed.
Make sure you watch the forum on Saturday evening at 7PM on WMDT.

Clarence Thomas, every lefty’s favorite conservative whipping boy, is the subject of a great post by Paul Smith, Jr. over at the DCBA site. The post is based on an insightful article from OpinionJournal.com.
The conventional, and greatly mistaken, wisdom is that Mr. Justice Thomas is unqualified to sit on the court and only serves as Antonin Scalia’s lackey. Nothing could be farther from the truth. While Scalia continues to be my personal favorite on the court, Thomas is probably the truest Reaganite sitting on the federal bench today.

With 21 months to go before the 2008 Presidential Election, NewsMax is speculating that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is backing former Taxachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the ‘08 GOP nomination. Say it ain’t so Jeb!
The only true Reaganite in the Bush family, Jeb Bush would be an odds on favorite with movement conservatives. Unfortunately, the US seems to be suffering from Bush fatigue at the moment.
Who does that leave for the nomination? While Newt Gingrich is far from perfect, he appears to be the most viable conservative candidate out there. There’s just one problem - Newt hasn’t declared.

From all I’ve been told, John Harris is a nice guy. He’s evidently been successful in his business. He also can’t spell.
Politicians make enough mistakes as it is. Do you want someone representing you who claims that blight is one of his 3 Big Issues, but can’t spell it? I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me, but I figure that you have a slightly better chance of fixing a problem if you can define it. It sure helps to spell it correctly.
Mr. Harris also doesn’t seem to be too worried about patronizing local businesses. I guess that mail house in Sharon, PA must have cut him one hell of a deal. Of course I don’t think he’ll get too many votes from the local mailing houses.

Martin O’Malley’s living wage bill may well become Maryland’s home grown version of the Davis-Bacon act. O’Malley - Glendening?
Maryland is already a closed shop state. What more does Big Labor want? The living wage bill is simply a ruse for unions to demand more at contract time. That would be great if the Bosses were simply concerned with increasing the living standard of their members. In reality, higher wages mean more dues money. More dues money means higher salaries for the Bosses. It also means more money flowing into the coffers of Dem politicians. More campaign contributions means the ability to demand more foolishness like the living wage bill.
When the only businesses left in Maryland are those that are vendors to the state and federal governments, where will we be?

The Virginia House Privileges and Elections Committee has killed a proposed constitutional amendment to make redistricting a “non-partisan” exercise. It amazes me that there was no call for such an amendment when the Democrats controlled the legislature.
Only after the GOP controls the process do we hear the clarion call to take the process out of the hands of elected officials.

Doubtful, but what could be in Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine’s head to endorse Illinois Sen. Barack Obama so early in the race. With 21 months to go before the 2008 election, why does Kaine feel the need to rush in now?
Of course, Virginia Democrat Chairman Dickie Cranwell has endorsed John Edwards. Maybe Kaine will persuade a few other prominent Dems to endorse Hillary, Kucinich and the rest of the candidate pool. Then he will really have his bets covered.

Are the Dem’s serious about repealing the death penalty? No. P. K. Burns provides an update on the status of the repeal of Maryland’s death penalty.
In my opinion the Maryland Dems will simply keep the current moratorium on the death penalty. To them it’s a win-win. Don’t worry about losing conservative voters by blaming it on those damn commie-lefty judges while placating their leftist base.

In true “Tilghman Times” fashion, opinion has no basis in reality and truth is not a luxury but something to be avoided. Something tells me that their crack editorial cartoonist, Bill Gibbons, has never attended a Salisbury City Council meeting under the reign of Mike Dunn.
No one treats their constituents with less respect than Mr. Dunn. Lynn Cathcart may come in second, but it’s not even close. The concept of a “Babysitter-at-large” is not something that will necessarily be needed under the new council, but is being used right now. If Mr. Gibbons bothered to attend a few meetings he would know that the powers that be send a babysitter to meetings on occasion; usually after Mike Dunn has one of his regular meltdowns.
