Leadership …

… or the lack of it.  Last night’s Salisbury City Council meeting featured multiple examples of why Salisbury needs new leadership.

After assuring multiple people at the last meeting that there would be additional comments permitted at the February 26th meeting regarding the old mall rezoning, Council President Mike Dunn refused to allow city resident Kate Manizade the ability to speak on the issue. This was an obvious ploy by Mike hoping that this would deny Kate standing in the event of an appeal. Too bad Mike. I don’t think that this tactic will work.

Mike Dunn refused to allow public comments. My only guess is that his TIVO was on the fritz and he needed to rush home to catch “24″. Of course, Mike is gone in a couple of months, an we’ll sure miss the hours of entertainment he has provided over the last 3 1/2 years.

Council Vice-President and Mayor wannabe, Gary Comegys showed his true stripes on Monday night when he lost his temper over the city’s capital budget. He claims that it is merely a “planning tool” and that the lack of an audit shouldn’t impact it. Wrong! Without an audit, such planning is near useless. Gary is “shooting in the dark”. Of course, that would never stop a man like Bubba.  When you’re spending other people’s money it’s soooo easy.

What do you do on a long trip in the car when your kid asks repeatedly, “Are we there yet?” You start by answering politely, then you perhaps explain a little further in depth to make sure the child understands that the end is not near, then you get a little huffy but still, even more asking by the children results in a more angered response, finally you are fishtailing the car in hopes of the kids flying out the window so you dont have to answer that same question again.

That is what it must be like to hear the same people get up, ask the same questions and criticize over and over again. Add to that the fact that some of the classless dissenters have decided that they are allowed to personally attack and slander elected officials.

This isnt about supporting the “Dream Team”, this is about supporting civil discourse in politics. I have stated before that I believe dissenters should state their disapproval, make sure that all the facts are on the table, then let the officials vote as they so choose. If you dont agree with that decision, then let them know at the polls. If the decision the official has made is egregious and illegal, there are means to go about handling the issue through the courts.

There is a segment that has gone from informed dissenters to hijackers of democracy. Their hyperbolic screeds against those that they have drawn up sides against have moved beyond entertaining to startling psychotic.

I know that I am the bastard child of the Eastern Shore blogging scene, but that doesnt mean that I do not make valid points. I challenge those who voice their opinions the loudest to come back with an intelligent argument that defends their immature actions or admit that they have let those with ulterior motives control the tone of the debate and they will work to bring civility to further political debates.

The primary election may be the turning point in changing the malaise in Salisbury’s city government — let’s make sure Smith, Cohen & Spies are the top three in the general election, also. It’s not too late to take back the town from the landlords and developers by defeating their puppet of the past (Comegys) and new recruits (Ewalt & Adkins) for “Dream Team” status.

Bubba is great at spending money before he get’s it, morally and financially bankrupt, he has the experience.
