Dewey Defeats Truman

While I have no confirmation, the word last night was that Pulitzer crowd down at the “Tilghman Times” already had an article in the can that declared Gary Comegys as the top vote getter of Tuesday’s Salisbury City Council primary. They were just waiting for the final vote count to dump some numbers into the piece.
Wishful thinking will only get you so far. There should have never been any doubt that Gary would make it through the primary, but the messages of Louise Smith, Terry Cohen and Time Spies obviously are getting through to voters.
Despite a last minute attempt by the local slumlords to push the Barrie Tilghman / Slumlord ticket of Comegys, Ewalt and Atkins the voters came out and showed their preference for a better Salisbury. Round 1 is over. Over the next five weeks Rounds 2 – 15 will be fought. I would suggest that Messrs. Comegys, Ewalt and Atkins break in their walking shoes.

The belief that Virginia needs to spend more on education is just another example of Dems pandering to their base and hoping to bring in some swing voters to boot. Their attempt to justify tax increases for transportation by claiming that education will suffer is not only old school, but ridiculous on its face. Bacon has the stats.
Since 1979, Virginia REAL funding for education has increased 147%. Staffing has increased 90%. Enrollement has increased only 13%.
Almost everyone is for good public education. Unfortunately for the NEA, too many of us also realize that throwing money at the problem is not always the answer.

… or the lack of it. Last night’s Salisbury City Council meeting featured multiple examples of why Salisbury needs new leadership.
After assuring multiple people at the last meeting that there would be additional comments permitted at the February 26th meeting regarding the old mall rezoning, Council President Mike Dunn refused to allow city resident Kate Manizade the ability to speak on the issue. This was an obvious ploy by Mike hoping that this would deny Kate standing in the event of an appeal. Too bad Mike. I don’t think that this tactic will work.
Mike Dunn refused to allow public comments. My only guess is that his TIVO was on the fritz and he needed to rush home to catch “24″. Of course, Mike is gone in a couple of months, an we’ll sure miss the hours of entertainment he has provided over the last 3 1/2 years.
Council Vice-President and Mayor wannabe, Gary Comegys showed his true stripes on Monday night when he lost his temper over the city’s capital budget. He claims that it is merely a “planning tool” and that the lack of an audit shouldn’t impact it. Wrong! Without an audit, such planning is near useless. Gary is “shooting in the dark”. Of course, that would never stop a man like Bubba. When you’re spending other people’s money it’s soooo easy.

In Tuesday’s Salisbury City Council primary you are allowed to vote for up to six (6) candidates. During the past few weeks I’ve been asked by many voters if they have to vote for six people. NO!
In my opinion, voters should vote for three (3) candidates – the three they want to win in April. It’s very simple. Voting for three people that you don’t want elected to city council is a waste. Remember, city council elections have very low turnout. Primary elections have even lower turnout. To vote for people other than the three you want to be elected could possibly cause one of your candidates not to make it past the primary.
For the reasons stated here, I believe that you should cast your vote for Terry Cohen, Louise Smith and Tim Spies. Four years from now, you will thank me for that advice.

Sunday’s “Tilghman Times†editorial on the primary was chock full of misinformation, for good reason.

This election cycle, the city seems ready to elect a council of critics: We hear a lot about what’s wrong and too little about what will be done to make things right. Issues? So what are they? Voters are right to wonder. The current crop of candidates has failed to make issues the center of the primary campaign, instead focusing on personalities, conflicts and a bevy of assorted outrageousness. Public forums have offered little, if any, insight. Read more

Bacon’s Rebellion covers RPV Chairman Ed Gillespie’s visit to Hampton. Gillespie glossed over his strategy for 2007 – 2009, but seemed to fail in convincing the faithful that we need to roll over for the tax and transportation caucus.

Comegys

Ewalt
Don’t believe me. We knew that the official Barrieland ticket was – Comegys, Atkins, Ewalt. That should provide adequate evidence that the slumlords are supporting Gary and his buddies. Ride by 315 Locust Terrace (just off Waverly Drive) and see who has a big banner out front. Also check out the yard signs in front of 320 Locust Terrace, 708 E. College Ave., 526 W. The house organ of the Barrie Tilghman administration granted her highness a “guest editorial” in Saturday’s addition. In yet another attempt to rebut evidence of her gross fiscal mismanagement of Barrieland’s finances the mayor claims, “We do not need campaign rhetoric. We need public discussion.”
I immediately ran to the library and looked up “public discussion” in the official “Barrieland Dictionary”. Public discussion is defined as “any public discourse, written or verbal, that is in agreement with pronouncements made by Queen Barrie or her vassals in the Barrieland court”.
I then looked up “campaign rhetoric”. The official dictionary reads, “see uncivil behavior“. Looking up “uncivil behavior”, the dictionary states, “any words (verbal or in writing), thoughts or deeds that are contrary to the official pronouncements of the Barrieland government or those of Queen Barrie herself”.
