When Ronald Reagan ran in 1976 and 1980 he was derided as a nut. He was out of “the mainstream of American politics”. He also defeated the Soviet Union, showed those in power how to make an economy grow and convinced a demoralized citizenry that America was (and is) still the greatest nation on earth.
