D - 7 and Counting
On July 7, 2006 the city of Salisbury sent a letter to Salisbury Mall Associates, LLC (one of many names the developers of the “Village” seem to go by these days) informing them that they had until January 5, 2007 to demolish and clear the site of the old Salisbury Mall:
… you are hereby ordered to demolish and remove the structure known as “The Salisbury Mall” in its entirety by Friday, January 5, 2007. Failure to comply with this order will result in the City taking one of two courses of action: the city shall cause the building to be razed and removed and the cost of such razing and removal shall be charged against the real estate upon which the structure is located and shall be a lien upon such real estate; or any person who fails to comply with a demolition order will be issued a two hundred dollar ($200) each day the violation continues. (read page 1 and page 2)
If the Mayor Tilghman and her “council leadership” weren’t in such a hurry to hand out subsidies in the form of developer reimbursements and tax increment financing the developers might actually take this seriously. Of course they know that Salisbury can’t find the money to demolish the old mall and clear the site (they have more subsidies to hand out). Instead, that dangerous eyesore will stay up until the developers have squeezed every nickel of taxpayer funds out of this boondoggle that they are able.
Who knows, Santa may visit my house and the old mall may be gone by the twelfth day of Christmas.
