The editorial page of Sunday’s mullet wrapper provide our last two pieces of evidence that the “paper†should change its name.
Have you ever noticed that the “Tilghman Times†seems to endorse every development planned for Salisbury yet never hesitates to criticize those outside of Wicomico County. Their editorial on the proposed “Discovery Place†project outside of Laurel, DE is a case in point.
- Laurel’s existing infrastructure surely will not be sufficient to accommodate Discovery Place. How will road and sewer expansions be handled, and who will pay?
- Doubling the town’s population will potentially double demand for classrooms, teachers and public safety services such as fire and police. How will that demand be met? And who will pay?
- What kind of jobs will become available to Laurel residents if Discovery Place is built? Will they be mostly low-paying, unskilled service-sector jobs? Will opportunities open up for management or skilled professionals?
Substitute Salisbury for Laurel and you have exactly what groups such as We Care have been trying to bring attention too; without much help from the TT. Of course if Mr. Horsey had chosen to develop in Salisbury, rather than 10 miles up the road I am sure that the “Tilghman Times†would be singing the praises of such a “visionary projectâ€; much the same as they have been shilling for the “Village†(old mall project).
He really missed a bet on this one too. If he had chosen to come a few miles south I am sure that Barrie, Mikey and the gang would have arranged a nice little subsidy for him. “Growth pays for growth†has a special meeting in Barrieland.
I don’t know who wrote this piece, but they would be ashamed if they had a conscience.
Laurel officials should focus instead on whether the town can realistically expect to meet the demands Discovery Place will put on roads, sewer and water, schools and public safety services. Those concerns require answers before annexation takes place or final approval is granted.
Where is the outrage for the poor citizens of Wicomico County. When has the “Tilghman Times†ever opposed an annexation by the city of Salisbury. When have these puppets of the current regime ever shown concern for the stress placed on schools, public safety and public utilities by unchecked growth in Salisbury? The answer, of course, is that they haven’t.
Our last tidbit comes in the form of a letter to the editor. Mr. Hal Noble of Salisbury writes in opposition to the TIF financing for the developers of the “Village†and Aydelotte Farms. While Davis Ruark is savaged on page 1, where is the coverage of a proposed $14 million giveaway ($11 million for the Road to Nowhere and $3 million for developer “reimbursementsâ€) by Queen Barrie and her jesters. Rather than even making an attempt at reporting we are left with Mr. Noble’s letter. While Mr. Noble’s letter is too well written to substitute for an article in the “Tilghman Timesâ€, wouldn’t it be nice if the citizens of Salisbury received a little warning before their collective pocket is picked for such a large sum?
Is there anything that can be done about an organization as disgraceful as the “Tilghman Times I doubt it. It must be profitable or even Gannett wouldn’t put up with this foolishness. About the only thing that you can do is let advertisers know that you don’t appreciate their patronage of a company who opposes your way of life. Unfortunately, they are the only game in town for print advertising.

Where is the Daily Times whenever Barrie and the Dream Team annex land into the City of Salisbury — since Dunn, Comegys & Cathcart were elected (Nov. 2003) they have annexed hundreds of acres that will build out with thousands of units — for example, the Hearne site (468 units) — with no real contribution by any developer (plus they are still doing those sewer and water reimbursements, and now the special tax breaks called TIF’s). But shame on them in Laurel or Cambridge if they want to do any annexation (”it can’t happen there”).
As I recall, from a Planning and Zoning meeting, I heard from someone on the board, the number of applications for new housing units is around 14,000, currently. That is plenty to chew on for now, any concideration of new projects other than high paying factory jobs should be told that the waiting list is long enough. Any other conciderations are a waste of city’s time and money.
