Ruark Fined for Cutting, What About Burning?
Developer Tom Ruark was fined $28,000 for violating regs prohibiting the cutting of trees on portions of his Sassafras Meadows development. It’s great to see a developer held to the same standards that the government holds ordinary citizens. The next question for the state is when are they going to punish Ruark for violating a state wide ban on outdoor burning that Ruark appeared to disregard?

That’s not how it works where I’m from — someone like Ruark would be a “poster child” for punishment, especially if he pleaded ignorance, which is “no excuse” as some of us were taught in school or by our parents.
Then, Nuff Said, I wish it was true that at least some things here worked the way they do where you’re from. Here, the big guys like Tom Ruark seem too often to walk away from their transgressions, supported by others who do the same sort of things, again and again. It’s only recently that we’ve seen that they don’t walk away quite as easily as before, as more and more of us become outraged and become involved with making sure that each of these clowns pays his real world dues, just like those common folk like us do. More dues paying is on the way. More people who want this to happen and rein in those who do and would indescriminately bleed us through a thousand cuts need to become and stay involved, and make this the place that meets the expectations that our parents and schools hoped to instill in us.
The blame should go to civic leaders who continue to give preferential treatment to those who helped them into office. Lets face it, for the last 12 years almost everyone we have elected has sold our area out to developers. How many elected officials in the last 12 years were either developers, or in Real Estate with ties to developers?
The last election had less than a 25% turnout of voters, if as many people voted as complained, we could have probably avoided a lot of this mess we are encapsulated by. The test is to get people off of their “Duffs” and get out and vote, it also helps to research your candidate on issues and conflicts of interest that might be a controversy.
Don’t be afraid to ask the same questions to a candidate that you would ask of and elected official.

Not likely ever. It’s the kind of thing for which a warning would be given, especially if the burner denied any knowledge of the burn ban.
