Tonight’s Salisbury City Council meeting has two major items on the agenda. The first is a public hearing on the FY07 budget. This is the part of the budget process where citizens get to see vent there frustrations for pet projects or against government waste. This is also where citizens get to see if their elected officials listen. Read more

Gaithersburg City Council has approved a county-funded “Day Labor Center”. Translation: Taxpayer money spent to violate federal immigration law.
With a towns and counties across the country doing this I want to know why Homeland Security doesn’t have ICE agents raiding these places on a daily basis?

Mike Dunn and his cohorts on Salisbury City Council have awarded a contract to Jakubiak & Associates to negotiate an annexation agreement between the city and Vernon Esham / Faith Baptist Church for the church’s property on Dagsboro Road. Forget for a moment that Mr. Jakubiak is a client of Mr. Dunn’s. Forget for a moment that the city pays city attorney Paul Wilber a pile of cash each year to handle such things. Forget for a moment that Mr. Wilber will wind up getting his cut out of this transaction anyway.
Who is paying Mr. Jakubiak to represent the city on this matter? Vernon Esham. That’s right, Mr. Jakubiak is being paid by the same person he is supposed to be extracting concessions from. If this doesn’t define “conflict of interest”, what does? I wonder which one of the geniuses on the Rubber Stamp came up with this idea?

Baltimore Mayor and gubernatorial hopeful Martin O’Malley has received a small gift from the Ehrlich administration… if his campaign is able to take advantage of it.
Some genius in the Ehrlich administration scheculed the annual walk across the Bay Bridge for today. Remember, this is the same weekend as Springfest in Ocean City. With one span closed today, traffic should be worse than usual on people’s return to the Western Shore.
While it’s obvious that the Governor didn’t make this decision himself, someone in his administration had to sign off on it. With thousands of cars sitting in traffic the O’Malley campaign could put signs out on the westbound side of Rt. 50 reminding voters of their predicament and blaming Ehrlich. It sounds childish, I know, but little things like this help to put undecided voters into the decided column.
Hopefully for the citizens of Maryland, O’Malley’s people weren’t proactive on this issue. Hopefully, the Governor’s staff won’t allow something like this to occur again.

Developer Tom Ruark was fined $28,000 for violating regs prohibiting the cutting of trees on portions of his Sassafras Meadows development. It’s great to see a developer held to the same standards that the government holds ordinary citizens. The next question for the state is when are they going to punish Ruark for violating a state wide ban on outdoor burning that Ruark appeared to disregard?

The 2008 election is over two years away. The Dems must take Sen. George Allen pretty seriously as a candidate. They are already busy branding the Senator as a racist. Why? Because he wore a Confederate Battle Flag pin in a high school picture. Bill Clinton dodged the draft and used drugs. That’s OK. George Allen wore a pin and that must disqualify him for President.
