As Goes Salisbury

Sunday’s “Daily Times” contains an editorial decrying sprawl and the disappearance of farm land and open space. The claim is that Wicomico County government isn’t doing enough to prevent overdevelopment. The author is correct.

What demonstrates the paper’s blatant hypocrisy is that it fails to criticize Salisbury for promoting this development. The editors of the “Daily Times” should get off their collective bums and attend a city council meeting once in while.

The primary concern of Salisbury government, when it comes to development, is providing developers with everything they desire and boosting the assesed tax base.

Schools are a county problem. If you don’t believe me, ask Lynn Cathcart. Roads are something that can be postponed until the state puts up some more cash.

I guess the editors have some logical reason why developing a farm in the county is wrong, but annexing one into Salisbury and then developing it is “smart growth”.

It was Michael Dunn who (last year) said that the City need not consider the overcrowded school situation because “that’s a county problem”. Ms. Cathcart then said that it really was not a problem because the students at Bennett could be send to other schools and later that Bennett has always been overcrowded so folks should just accept it.

Real brillance at work. Comegys just grunted.

Saying that school overcrowding “Is a county problem,” by a city official, is like saying “let them eat cake!”

It may be true that the Salisbury City Council does not have jurisdiction(?) over County schools. Since Salisbury is in Wicomico County, residents of Salisbury are residents of Wicomico County; it’s my guess that a large percentage of Wicomico County students reside within Salisbury City limits.
