Will District 37 Get A New Senator?
The rumor is that Talbot County Commissioner Hillary Spence will challenge Sen. Richard Colburn for his seat this fall. While we would obviously prefer that a Republican retain the seat, Colburn is not the man (or woman) to best serve this district.
He has exhibited a string of severe character flaws over the last several years; everything from getting staff to write his school papers to having a hissy fit when he lost the GOP primary to Wayne Gilchrest. While Ms. Spence would never be my first choice as a state senator, she appears to be a great improvement over what we presently have. While I can’t hope for every member of the shore’s delegation to exhibit the same excellence as Lowell Stoltzfus, we definitely need better than Mr. Colburn.

While on a small level the residents of District 37 may be better with Colburn out and Spence in, will they support the likely Faustian bargain of Spence getting a little more pork for the district but in return having to play the good Democrat and go along with some of the issues that give us the moniker of the “People’s Republic of Maryland”? Would she have voted for the “Fair Share” bill or the so-called voting reform? How about the “gay marriage” constitutional amendment?
It’s not a question of whether or not Spence is a liberal. She is. The problem is that Colburn has gone over the edge. His own GOP colleagues don’t respect him. He seems to get in one little scandal after another. As Publius stated in his post, the best solution would be a primary opponent. Barring that, almost any alternative will do.
I agree. It’s great to finally have a little competition in this district. I wonder how many people know that Colburn has been rated the next to the least effective senator in Annapolis by his peers and others. The recent article in the Star Democrat said that Colburn was surprised that he is being challenged. Seems like he said he was surprised when he lost the race to Gilchrest. Our representatives in Annapolis should not be surprised. He is out of step, out of touch and needs to be out of office.
I had an opportunity to meet Hilary Spence while we (We Care) were in Annapolis testifying on the MACO bill for annexation moderation. I found her to be very articulate and well-informed. As first impressions go, she made an excellent one. I suspect that was not an anomaly.

Some more interesting news fron the north (from the Star-Democrat, a real newspaper):
Ridgely
New ordinances could mean added fees for residential developers
Money would pay for water and sewer maintenance
If approved, three new ordinances will mean developers looking to build in Ridgely will have to pay $12,000 in fees for each new home they build.
