Senility Is Setting In

My memory must be fading fast. Every time I read something in the paper about a proposed excise tax for Wicomico County something just didn’t ring true.

Initially, articles quoted Wicomico County Council President Tony Sarbanes as saying that the excise tax couldn’t go through because Councilwoman Stevie Prettyman had gotten state Senator Lowell Stoltzfus to block the bill. After a while, the press didn’t even need to quote Tony, they just printed it as fact. Something didn’t sit right in the back of my mind, but I’ve even been guilty of alluding to this position as well.

Senator Stoltzfus has evidently been quite consistent about his stance on the excise tax all along. He has repeatedly stated that he would support an excise tax only if it went to a referendum. While we at “Delmarva Dealings” do not as a rule believe in legislation by initiative, we have to stand up and commend Sen. Stoltzfus for being consistent in his position.

We wish other elected officials were built of the same timber.

Oops. I believe what Stoltzfus actually said was that he would support the excise tax if the Wicomico County Council supported the idea unanimously, which will never happen. He may have later mentioned a referendum, but his main point was that he wanted total support at the local level, which of course will never happen in my lifetime.
