The War of Ideas
The two great politcal wars of our time were fought and won with ideas. Margaret Thatcher revolutionized British politics to the point that today’s Labor Party is more conservative than the pre-Thatcher Tories. Ronald Reagan showed the world that America was still great and would win the Cold War.
Baroness Thatcher fought a philosophical battle with the help of men like Michael Oakeshott. Ronald Reagan, in addition to his own highly underrated intellect, had groups such as the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute to supply research and ideas.
Groups like these would not have been possible without men like Joseph Coors and John M. Olin. Today, the John M. Olin Foundation will award its final grants. Rather than become a perpituity and risk becoming the inverse of what the benefactor intended (like the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. McArthur Foundation), the Olin Foundation will live up to the ideals upon which it was founded.
