Victory at last!

The Wicomico County Council appears to have agreed on an APFO, a school impact fee and then to try for excise taxes. We should all be thrilled, right?

First, let’s see what comes to fruitition. If County Council does implement these plans I think we should all thank them. However, as in all things governmental, the devil is in the details. Read more

I haven’t figured out yet how Mike Dunn is going to take credit for the actions of County Council. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m willing to bet that Bozo and the Brigade all had long faces Tuesday. It appears that County Council will actually do something while Barrie and Mikey have been busy holding press conferences telling us all what they will do sometime in the future.

Debbie Campbell was probably the only happy membe of Salisbury Council; since she’s the only member who actually looks out for her constituents.

Note to the Brigade: developers are not your constituents.

Lee Owens‘ letter in Tuesday’s Daily Times is right on point. Until Wicomico County and Salisbury can find solutions to infrastructure funding, do we need to keep up this frenetic pace?

How long will the so-called “inspection sweeps” last? As long as Barrie Tilghman and Mike Dunn can get their names and pictures in the paper.

Will they actually clean up our neighborhoods? Past experience says no, but eventually they have to get one right (even when it is not their intention).

Monday night Salisbury Council voted to modify their Rules of Procedure to prohibit signs. Fair enough. They could be a fire hazard if the crowd was big enough. But please don’t lecture us on decorum.

“The council arrived at their normal time to be greeted by all these protest signs,” Dunn said Monday. He said he thought they disturbed the decorum of the meeting room.

“You don’t see them hanging in the chamber of the U.S. Senate. You don’t see them hanging in the chamber of the General Assembly,” Dunn said.

To steal a line from Lloyd Bentsen’s 1988 Vice Presidential debate with Dan Quayle:

Mike, I know the U.S. Senate and I know the General Assembly and believe me you are neither.

No question, Katrina was devastating. I don’t think that there are many people who would dispute that we need to help those impacted by the storm. But at some point a dollar figure must be placed on our innate to desire help. The “New York Times” discusses the costs of re-building the levee system.

A Victory For Education?

This “New York Times” editorial discusses the recent suit brought by the NEA against President Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” act. It unfortunately begs a far greater question?

Why is the federal government involved in education to begin with? This is another example of a “conservative” making Lyndon Johnson look like Barry Goldwater. At the rate we are going, the federal and states governments (thanks to unfunded mandates) will be broke before I have grandchildren. The question for those of us in the GOP will then be who to blame it on? Even Karl Rove couldn’t spin this against the Dems.

Keep an eye on healthcare costs as well. The President’s prescription drug plan could very well give us HillaryCare, courtesy of the GOP. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re all on Medicare within the next ten years. It will be the only way to keep the system afloat.

We could always change the national anthem to “O Canada”.
